The Adult Learning Inspectorate
The business
“The Adult Learning Inspectorate aims to be a world class quality assessment business, raising standards of education and training for young people and adults through inspecting and reporting on the learning provision they receive.
The ALI is a non-departmental public body established under the Learning and Skills Act 2000. Our role is to inspect and report on the quality of education and training for adults and young people funded by public money. We can also be commissioned to inspect private training provision in the UK and overseas.”

The challenge
The ALI uses PWA to share information on its 270 employees between payroll, pensions and benefits. The system also holds information on former employees.
The ALI had two concerns. The ALI were applying for the BS7799 standard and did not have specific procedures for PWA to ensure they reached the standard. They also were finding that the PWA system was not sufficiently meeting the needs of the human resources department.
The options
Although it was clear that PWA was capable of meeting the requirements of the human resources department, given the development work required, a system replacement was believed to be the best option.
To allow the HR department to focus on strategic activities, the decision was taken to outsource any development work on PWA.
Totalamber contacted the ALI to find out if they needed any assistance. The outcome of this was that, as an independent consultancy, totalamber assured the ALI that it would be more effective to customise, rather than replace the system.
The Solution
To assist the HR department at the ALI in complying with BS7799, Totalamber assisted in implementing a BS7799 compliant procedure for housekeeping and security within PWA. This helped toward the ALI passing the audit and receiving the BS7799 standard. As a result of the work and knowledge the totalamber consultant demonstrated the HR department became keen to progress further developments.
Totalamber consultant, Jamie Smith, returned to customise the reporting facility, leading to a dramatic reduction in the time taken to produce reports. What would normally have taken a few days’ work now takes a few hours. He also delivered user training to 2 groups of people, leaving the ALI with the capability and confidence to get the most from their PWA system.
Ultimately the implementation of a replacement system, was avoided. The ALI is currently considering interfacing their PWA system with their pensions, benefits and payroll systems.
Client Endorsement
“Thanks to totalamber, we were able to meet the requirements of BS7799. As a result of further development work to PWA the HR team has a system that works for us and has removed the need to replace the system with an alternative solution.”
“We find totalamber to be very proactive. My account manager understood exactly what I needed. Her regular contact meant that I was well informed, and it helped to keep things on track. The consultant we worked with has exactly the skills we needed, and more”
