In the 1970's, Cognos (under the name Quasar), wrote programs and designed and implemented custom information systems that generated reports from the huge amounts of data stored on mainframe and mini-computers. By 1979, Cognos employed over 130 people and had launched a software products division to help leverage this increasing market.

In the 1980's Cognos developed an application development tool called PowerHouse that could be reused in different circumstances in different organizations. The hunch paid off, by 1989 the company’s revenues hit $100 million and was now the largest firm in the world devoted to mission-critical software development tools.

In the 1990's, Cognos created PowerPlay—a PC Windows-based business analysis tool. Shortly thereafter Cognos released Impromptu—an innovative query and reporting tool. Together the two products became the flagship offerings for Cognos in the 90’s. By 1999 the success of Cognos PowerPlay, Impromptu, PowerHouse, and the whole business intelligence (BI) line resulted in revenues of over $300 million and the need for over 2,000 staff worldwide.
